Custom Welded Steel Frame Structures | Large Industrial Fabrication

Large Welded Frames Need Dimensional Control After Welding

For large industrial frames, the main challenge is often not creating the steel structure itself, but maintaining the required geometry after multiple welded joints are completed.

Frame squareness, diagonal dimensions, mounting surfaces, hole positions, and equipment interfaces should be considered together with the welding sequence and fixture method.

Large Welded Frame Examples

What Usually Needs Control?

Overall SquarenessLong welded structures should be checked across width, length, and diagonal references rather than only individual tube dimensions.
Mounting SurfacesEquipment mounting areas may need to remain aligned with the final frame datum.
Hole RelationshipsAnchor holes, brackets, and mounting patterns should remain correctly positioned after welding.
Frame FlatnessBase rails or support points may need control where the structure sits on a floor, machine base, or other assembly.
Parallel InterfacesOpposing rails, brackets, or mounting plates may require consistent spacing through the finished frame.

Welding Distortion Should Be Considered Before Final Assembly

Heat introduced during welding can move tubes, plates, and brackets away from their original position. For larger structures, the effect can accumulate across several joints.

Fixture design, welding sequence, temporary bracing, controlled weld placement, and intermediate dimensional checks can all be considered according to the frame design.

Post-Weld Machining Can Be Added Where Required

Some welded structures contain mounting faces, precision hole patterns, or reference surfaces that are difficult to keep in their final condition through welding alone.

Where specified on the drawing, selected areas may be machined after welding so that the final interface relates to the completed frame rather than the pre-weld components.

Large Frames May Be Designed as Separate Modules

For oversized equipment structures, the customer design may divide the frame into welded subassemblies connected by bolts or other mechanical interfaces.

This can make manufacturing, finishing, transport, and final installation easier where a single welded assembly would be difficult to handle.
